Anyone who has ever been involved with school fundraising knows that there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. What works for a first grader probably won’t fly with a group of high schoolers. But after years of bake sales, catalog orders, and everything in between, a few options seem to work no matter the grade.
Elementary School: Keep It Simple and Fun
For younger kids, it’s all about excitement and ease. Anything that involves selling candy tends to be well-received. The kids are proud to show off their stash, and parents appreciate that there’s no complicated paperwork or expensive buy-ins.
Middle School: Make It Social
Middle schoolers are starting to care about what their friends think, so fundraisers that get them working together are most effective. Selling candy bars or Katydids in teams, maybe at games or events, turns it into a bit of friendly competition. They like having a goal to chase (and perhaps a pizza party if they hit it).

High School: Give Them Independence
By high school, students want to do things their way. Allowing them to take candy fundraising materials to work, sports practice, or around the neighborhood means they can easily fit fundraising into their own schedules. Plus, it gives them ownership and a cut of the success.
Whatever the age, the best fundraisers are the ones that are simple, social, and, above all, sweet.
